Pick a Squash, Any Squash

There are many varieties of winter squash to try. Most varieties are fantastic when roasted, sautéed, baked, or pureed. Squash is an incredibly versatile vegetable. Here are a few common varieties that you can consider for your garden:

• Butternut squash

• Hubbard squash

Plant Early

During spring, prepare your seeds after your last frost of the season. Put out seedlings when they are about 3-4 weeks old. Make sure to stop planting squash about 2-3 months before the first freezing bout of winter hits. Squash grows best in warmer climates, so keep that in mind if you feel like you are planting late.

Soil & Planting

You want your squash to grow during warm weather in moist but drained soil with a pH of about 6.0 to 6.5. Work in about two inches of compost and fertilizer and plant 5-6 seeds per hill. You should get about 3-4 squash plants per hill. Save your seeds so you can continue to plant next season!

Before you begin, you want to make sure that you have the perfect soil ready for your pumpkin seeds. Add some compost to ensure the soil is rich in the right nutrients for your pumpkins to grow. Compost also helps soil retain moisture better, which will help your pumpkins to stay hydrated. If you do not have your own compost, many garden stores or professional landscapers will have a compost resource.

Lots of Sunlight

Pumpkin plants need lots of sunlight to grow perfectly. Make sure to plant your pumpkins where the sun is shining at least six hours a day.

How to Calculate Total Square Footage

In order to determine how much mulch you need, you need to calculate the total cubic yards of your landscaping area. Measure the length and width of the area to be mulched in feet. Add all areas of square footage together to get the total square footage that needs to be covered. Make sure you are accurate with your measurements!

How Deep Do You Want Your Mulch?

Determine the thickness of the mulch you would prefer. Generally, flowerbeds and gardens require a good 2-3 inches of mulch. If your goal is for heavy weed or grass suppression, you will require 6+ inches of coverage. You can’t go wrong if you estimate a bit more than you need.

Calculate Your Cubic Yards

Simply multiply your total area in feet by how deep your mulch will be in inches. For example, if your square footage is 600 and you require 2 inches of mulch, multiply 600 by 2 to get 1200. Divide your answer by 300 and round to the nearest whole number. Therefore 1200/3 = 4 cubic yards of mulch.
