The Pros and Cons of Artificial Turf for Your Pets

artificial turf installation fort worth, tx

People cherish their pets. Some even go so far as to treat them like small, fuzzy children within their own homes. Of course, we all want the best for our four-legged friends who stand by our side, which is why it makes so much sense to consider artificial turf in the backyard for your feline or canine pal. When considering such an option, however, homeowners should understand the pros and cons involved with such an installation and what it involves.

Pros

To start, artificial turf has an incredibly low maintenance cost. You do not need to water, fertilize, or use pesticides on the turf. The lack of pesticides especially makes it a wonderful option for pets. You receive the benefits of a beautiful, green lawn, but without the cost or effort.

Second, artificial turf is quite durable. We all know that dogs love to dig and cats love to shred. Artificial turf is not exactly like grass, so you won’t notice holes or mess. No more muddy patches or uneven areas from your pet playfully destroying the yard.

Cons

As for cons, there are two major factors to consider: heat and cost. For heat, the artificial grass is generally made of polyethylene fibers, which tend to get quite hot when exposed to sunlight directly. This can be uncomfortable for those walking barefoot and for your pets. A bit of carefully placed shade should do wonders, though.

In terms of cost, synthetic grass is going to be a big investment for a homeowner. It can be somewhat expensive when you first make the purchase, though it can be a wise investment when compared to natural grass. You have to consider the long-term.

Professional Landscaping Services Help You Maintain A Beautiful Property

lawn's makeoverEveryone loves owning a well-maintained yard, but not everyone loves working in their yard throughout the year. Also, as your days get busier and busier with school, work and holidays it can be difficult to find time to even get outside. That’s why Bloom’s Landcare offers both of the important components of long term yard care to keep your landscape beautiful all year long, rain or shine. These important components are “Landscape Maintenance” and “Plant Development”. When these are used in conjunction to protect the beauty and value of your property you will be amazed at the lovely appearance your garden sustains throughout the year.

Landscape Maintenance

The first important component of landscaping is maintenance. With Bloom’s recognized eye for beauty we are sure to create a landscape that will not only delight the eye but also be maintainable all year long. Below are a few of things we include in our landscape maintenance service:

Plant Development

The other, equally important component to landscape care is “Plant Development”. This implementation ensures that your plants receive everything they need to flourish all year long. Some of the things we do during plant development include:

  • Aerating the soil around the root system of trees and shrubs.
  • Changing irrigation nozzles to ensure equal hydration and prevent overwatering.
  • Mulching.
  • Treating plants with organic pesticides.
  • Applying liquid fertilizers directly to each plant.
  • Proper pruning.
  • Deadheading.
  • Removing spent foliage.
  • Pulling voluntary growth.
  • Maintaining your garden.

Squash: How to Grow the Perfect Fall Vegetable

grow the perfect fall vegetableThere is nothing quite as nostalgic as eating winter squash on a chilly autumn day. This infamous
comfort food is the key ingredient in many favorite fall dishes. Along with being incredibly healthy, they also have an impressive storage life. Growing your favorite type of squash can be quite simple. Here are a few steps to follow that will have you growing your very own squash in no time!

Pick a Squash, Any Squash

There are many varieties of winter squash to try. Most varieties are fantastic when roasted, sautéed, baked, or pureed. Squash is an incredibly versatile vegetable. Here are a few common varieties that you can consider for your garden:

  • Butternut squash
  • Buttercup squash
  • Hubbard squash
  • Acorn squash
  • Spaghetti squash
  • Cushaw squash

Plant Early

During spring, prepare your seeds after your last frost of the season. Put out seedlings when they are about 3-4 weeks old. Make sure to stop planting squash about 2-3 months before the first freezing bout of winter hits. Squash grows best in warmer climates, so keep that in mind if you feel like you are planting late.

Soil & Planting

You want your squash to grow during warm weather in moist but drained soil with a pH of about 6.0 to 6.5. Find an area of full sun and make a meter wide planting hill into rows along your garden’s edge. Make sure your soil is loose and make your planting sites about 12 inches deep. Work in about two inches of compost and fertilizer and plant 5-6 seeds per hill. You should get about 3-4 squash plants per hill. Save your seeds so you can continue to plant next season!

Tips for Growing Perfect Pumpkins

Growing Perfect PumpkinsHalloween is full of fun traditions, many of them surrounding pumpkins. Whether it is carving a festive jack-o-lantern, or baking some tasty pumpkin treats, imagine doing it all with pumpkins you have grown yourself! Growing pumpkins is not difficult when you know what to do. Get a head start on growing pumpkins for next Halloween! Here are a few tips on how to grow the absolutely perfect pumpkins.

The Right Soil

Before you begin, you want to make sure that you have the perfect soil ready for your pumpkin seeds. Add some compost to ensure the soil is rich in the right nutrients for your pumpkins to grow. Compost also helps soil retain moisture better, which will help your pumpkins to stay hydrated. If you do not have your own compost, many garden stores or professional landscapers will have a compost resource.

Lots of Sunlight

Pumpkin plants need lots of sunlight to grow perfectly. Make sure to plant your pumpkins where the sun is shining at least six hours a day.

Choose Your Seedlings

Make sure to plant your pumpkin seeds when the temperatures are warmest during the day. Let the seeds germinate and them plant the most robust seedlings in the ground.

Water Thoroughly

Pumpkins need plenty of water to grow. In fact, a pumpkin is about 90% water! So make sure to soak each mound and make sure it doesn’t dry out during the heat of the day.

Prune & Trim

As your pumpkin vines grow, make sure to prune any leaves that look unsightly, for the absolute best quality pumpkins, trim each vine so each plant only produces one pumpkin. As they grow, make sure the bottom of the pumpkin rests on the ground to get that perfect round shape.

How Much Mulch Do I Need?

How Much Mulch NeedA rich layer of mulch has the power to tie your landscaping together and gives your flowerbeds a nice clean appearance. It also benefits your garden by reducing evaporation of water. As it degrades, it improves the soil by adding in minerals and nutrients. With all the great benefits of mulch, you don’t want to skip this very easy and inexpensive way to improve your landscaping. But how much do you need? Blooms Landcare can assist you and making that perfect calculation

How to Calculate Total Square Footage

In order to determine how much mulch you need, you need to calculate the total cubic yards of your landscaping area. Measure the length and width of the area to be mulched in feet. Add all areas of square footage together to get the total square footage that needs to be covered. Make sure you are accurate with your measurements!

How Deep Do You Want Your Mulch?

Determine the thickness of the mulch you would prefer. Generally, flowerbeds and gardens require a good 2-3 inches of mulch. If your goal is for heavy weed or grass suppression, you will require 6+ inches of coverage. You can’t go wrong if you estimate a bit more than you need.

Calculate Your Cubic Yards

Simply multiply your total area in feet by how deep your mulch will be in inches. For example, if your square footage is 600 and you require 2 inches of mulch, multiply 600 by 2 to get 1200. Divide your answer by 300 and round to the nearest whole number. Therefore 1200/3 = 4 cubic yards of mulch.

Sometimes the calculation for mulch is not that easy. If you need professional landscaping assistance, contact Blooms Landcare. Call [phone] to schedule one of our experts to come and assist you.

Top Ways for Saving Money on Landscaping

Saving Money on LandscapingLandscaping can be expensive, and in today’s economy, saving money is of the utmost importance! While ideas in your head may seem to be an unreachable cost for having your yard look nice, there are a few ways to cut budget corners but turn your dream garden into a reality. Here at Bloom’s Landcare, we offer the following tips that can help trim those hedges without trimming your bank account!

Timing

The key to saving money on landscaping is timing the best time to actually buy. Keep track of the seasons, stock and delivery schedules of your nursery; your patience can pay off by getting the better deals on what you want! If you are planning projects that require wooden structures, lumber is typically less expensive if you buy during winter months.

Planning

Before you start buying your supplies and decor for your landscaping, you should come up with a detailed plan. Sketch out your ideas and take the dimensions of your yard into consideration- what is in your head may not always fit reality. Knowing your exact needs can prevent excessive buying and will help with saving money. Depending on your budget, it may be worth having a professional come out to consult ideas or even have a design for any structures you may be considering.

Expectations of Weight

If you are buying substrate (mulch, soil, sand, gravel, rocks, etc.) the total weights can be very misleading. Depending on what substrate you are buying, it may be measured in volume such as cubic yards or weight. One cubic yard of soil can weigh more than one ton! It is important to precisely calculate just how much you need and always better to go a bit over than under.

Making the Purchase

When you are ready to buy, more often than not, people go to their local home improvement warehouse since they have everything you need. While providing great buys on substrates, common plants, and building materials, they may lack in care of the plants you are looking for. Check specialty shops, local nurseries, or even online nurseries. Many times you can find specials on what you are looking for and the variety of flora greatly exceeds what you will find at the larger warehouses. Pool and pond shops may offer better care and expertise with waterscapes. Plan out your landscape project in different steps instead of buying all at once. This way you won’t go over budget and you still get what you want.

Simple Summer Landscaping Ideas

Simple Summer Landscaping Ideas

Summer is the perfect season to get outside and spend some time in your garden. There is nothing quite like enjoying your morning coffee, afternoon tea, or a night cap while staring out at a beautifully landscaped yard. Even if you don’t have the greenest of thumbs, there are easy things you can do to take your backyard from zero to hero. Here are a few simple summer landscaping ideas for your home.

Pavers

Placing some decorative patio areas or walkways are a great way to add depth and style to your yard. This can also lay the blueprint for further landscaping. Professional pavers with knowledge and expertise can be difficult to find. Speak to your local landscaping professionals to brainstorm some great concrete and path ideas.

Flower Boxes

Adding some charming flower boxes onto a windowsill or off of a deck banister is a quick and inexpensive idea to brighten your Dallas and Fort Worth home for summer. There are some species of flowers that will fair better than others in a window box. Make sure to look at the amount of sun the area gets before choosing your flowers or plants.

New Furniture Pads

If you have patio furniture with fabric padding, then you know that it only takes a few seasons for that cloth material to start to fade. Replacing the covers on your padding can be a quick face lift for your patio.
